Winners of the CITRIS Big Ideas competition

4/18/2011

The Hep B Project won third place in a competition held by CITRIS (Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society) for $5,000!

Thanks to Adele, Flora, David, and Melanie who submitted a proposal for the GIS mapping of hepatitis B infection and immunization in the Bay Area.

Here's a picture of Melanie, Adele, and Flora receiving the award (from left to right):

Here is a description of the project proposal:
The lack of a central county database of patient hepatitis B statuses in the Bay Area results in an
inefficient allocation of resources in the fight against hepatitis B. This project will address that issue
by utilizing existing databases of non-sensitive patient data to create dynamic maps of hepatitis B
prevalence and at-risk populations in the Bay Area. The mapping project will combine Geographic
Information System (GIS) technology with an easy-to-navigate interface, allowing users to visualize
the areas of greatest need for preventative and disease management services. The project aims
to ultimately consolidate all sources of hepatitis B patient data to help public health officials and
community organizations target at-risk and affected populations in a more efficient and cost-effective
manner.

Clinic updates

4/18/2011

Both our Wednesdays and Saturday clinics have been going well. We have had the pleasure of welcoming new volunteers as consistent clinic members, and they are quickly adapting to the flow of clinic and are very important parts of our project. Thanks for your dedication!

Currently, The Hep B Project is thinking about possibly creating a new clinic date, or a new clinic location. We believe we may have exhausted the patients that we are able to reach during this time and this place, and we hope that by a change of location and/or time, we are able to maximize our efforts and reach new populations.
