Happy Birthday, SLHP!

On 9/27, Street Level Health Project celebrated its tenth anniversary at the Oakland Museum of California! Street Level Health has provided the Hep B Project with the space to meet our patients and to provide our services - as such, the event was near and dear to the Project as well. The evening was not only a celebration of SLHP, but a celebration of efforts to provide affordable healthcare for the disadvantaged. There were several keynote speakers, ranging from physician to councilwoman. It was clear that SLHP not only influences the community members it serves, but other organizations around it as well.

Our own volunteers, Hattie and Albert, attended the celebration!

During the evening, SLHP honored Kathy Ahoy, our supervising nurse - throughout all the years that SLHP has existed, she has worked tirelessly to gather support and funding to sustain the organization. She is important not only to SLHP, but to the Hep B Project as a supervising nurse who helps us provide medical services to the low-income and uninsured.

The Hep B Project has been continuing its work towards fighting Hepatitis B in the Alameda Country area - as we go into fall, there have been many events which we hope will help us branch out into the community even more.

Celebration of Dalai Lama's Birthday

TANC (Tibetan Americans of North America) celebrated the birthday of Dalai Lama, while setting up healthcare stations to reach out to the community members.

Lifelong Medical Care sponsored a health fair for all ages - with raffle tickets, prizes, and different organizations providing their own freebies, it was a great day to network and learn about the volunteer work going on in the Berkeley/Oakland area!

Walgreens partnered up with AHS to bring organizations together in Oakland - during the fair, they provided free services such as HIV testing and vision testing to serve the community!

3 health fairs, 2 outreach events, 40+ people screened - May and June have been busy months for the Hep B Project! Aside from our weekly clinics, we've had wonderful opportunities to help out at various events and attend health fairs. One notable event was the on-site screening event at VACCEB (Vietnamese American Community Center of the Easy Bay) - within three hours, we screened an astonishing number of 41 people, with over 50 people coming in and out of the table the volunteers set up.

Tibetan Americans of Northern California (TANC) Health Fair

4/18/2012

This past Sunday 4/15, the Hep B Project had the opportunity to go to a health fair hosted by TANC (Tibetan Americans of Northern California)! This fair was created mostly for people who have limited means of transportation, and therefore cannot make it to health clinics as often as they need. We gave free vaccinations, and provided screening to 14 people. We look forward to working more with TANC in the future.

Truckers' Vaccination Clinic

2/18/2012

This past Thursday, 2/16, was our monthly Truckers' Vaccination clinic. After holding a truckers' health fair last year, we realized that many people who were screened at the fair couldn't make our clinics. Since then, the Hep B project has been holding monthly clinics at OT 411. These clinics are mainly intended for vaccinating people who cannot make our weekly Wednesday clinic. We vaccinated 5 people this week, and we look forward to more successful clinics in the future months.

Events Updates

Two big updates since the last post!
1/19 - Truckers' Vaccination Clinic. We are currently holding monthly on-site vaccination clinics for truckers whose work times overlap with our regular clinic hours. 3 people were successfully vaccinated, and we hope to do the same next Thursday, 2/16, when we go back!

1/21 - RICE GIVEAWAY EVENT. We outreached to nearly 200 people waiting in line for free rice. It was exciting to have such a big group so close to our Saturday clinic location, and the event itself was a new experience for the volunteers.

Saturday Clinic

12/17/2011

The Hep B Project set up for Saturday Clinic and was surprised to find about 100 people lined up just a few blocks from the location of our Saturday Clinic. A crowd had assembled because a charity organization was passing out free bags of rice for the holiday season. With the help of our Cantonese volunteers, we were able to outreach to the entire line and educate them a little bit about hepatitis B while they were waiting. This was especially convenient since it was so close to our Saturday Clinic location so that those in line could easily know where we are located. This same organization is planning another rice giveaway in January, and the Hep B Project will be there to provide these same educational and screening services to the large crowd that turns out.

Wat Buddhanusorn Thai Temple

Today was an educational event located at the Wat Buddhanusorn Thai Temple in Fremont. The temple hosted a festival while the Hep B Project, as well as Alameda County Hep B Free, and other organizations, did tabling on the side. We offered free blood pressure screenings as well as pamphlets and information about Hepatitis B. The event was received warmly by the community. Many of the visitors did not know their vaccination status and the Hep B Project was there to provide information and support about how they could take control of their healthcare.
