How to join
The Hep B Project is a collaboration among students, free clinics, and the Alameda County Public Health Department to educate, screen, and vaccinate the at-risk Asian and Pacific Islander (API) population for Hepatitis B, a virus that can lead to liver cancer. According to research studies, 1 in10 APIs are chronically infected with Hepatitis B. However, a Hepatitis B vaccine has been available for quite some time so it is absurd that anyone should be infected with Hepatitis B these days when a vaccine has been available for more than 2 decades.
The Hep B Project seeks to address this issue, especially in the East Bay where Hepatitis B services are unavailable. The project currently has a weekly clinic on Wednesday afternoons in Oakland staffed by the project’s volunteers in which free screenings and vaccinations are provided. The Hep B Project is also involved in education through staffing tables at health fairs and giving presentations at community centers as well as forming community partnerships with existing health organizations. Students with an interest in public health, preventative medicine, patient interaction, community outreach, translation, health disparities, or community organizing are highly encouraged to consider joining. This is an ideal opportunity for students interested in learning what it takes to start a new health initiative and incorporate it into the community.
Volunteers should be able to commit to the project for at least 8 months which involves attending biweekly meetings on Thursday evenings, volunteering on weekends, calling patients regarding lab results, participating in community outreach events, and completing other tasks to help the project run smoothly (3-7 hours a week). No prior experience is needed. Volunteer training will be provided.
